The past 5 years have been great for mystery movies, with many amazing titles coming out. But there are just some that just stick with you because of their ability to keep you guessing, deliver an ending you could have never seen coming, and, for me, stay true to the novels that inspired them. If you’re like me and love such mysteries too, you might want to keep reading, because boy, have I got a treat for you. In this article, I’ll share 5 mystery movie adaptations that perfectly capture the essence of their novels and are highly entertaining. The best part is you can catch them online, so if you haven’t yet, you might want to start exploring WiFi plans to make sure you have a fast and reliable internet connection in place.
Now, let’s begin!
The Woman in Cabin 10
You’re going to be respecting journalists a lot more after this one, thanks to Keira Knightley’s unmatchable acting skills.
In the movie, Keira plays a journalist named Laura, invited on a yacht by a billionaire to cover a fundraising gala. Things take a dark turn when one night she witnesses a woman falling off the boat from cabin 10, and alerts the others, only to learn there’s no one staying there.
Has something from her past driven her insane? Or is she being manipulated as part of a major conspiracy? Her relentless journey reveals a shocking twist, one that will make you question the extent of human madness.
The Thursday Murder Club
Wrapping a mystery movie in a light blanket of comedy is no easy task, but this movie does it really well.
The movie’s ensemble cast features legends like Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan (the best Bond), Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, all of whom deliver great range with their quirky personalities, witty jokes, and amazing detective skills.
They all play retirees who try to solve cold murder cases for fun, until a sudden death takes place in their retirement home. What follows is a fun-filled race against time. The novel was the first of 5, so who knows, we may see more amazing sequels follow soon.
The Pale Blue Eye
For a long time, I couldn’t see Christian Bale as anything other than Batman. I mean, come on, The Dark Knight was a classic, but The Pale Blue Eye shows that there’s no limit to his acting skills.
In the movie, Bale plays widowed detective Augustus Landor, whose daughter has supposedly left him without a trace, a mystery that constantly haunts him, only for another one to come knocking at his door. He must investigate the grim murder of a cadet at a boarding school, but what starts as one murder soon turns into two.
Joined by another cadet named Edgar Allan Poe (yes, exactly whom you’re thinking), Augustus embarks on a journey that reveals an unexpected motive and an emotional battle between right and wrong.
The Woman in The Window
This one kind of reminded me of Disturbia (might want to watch it too if you haven’t already), but with much darker twists.
The movie is the story of a child psychologist named Anna Fox (played by Amy Adams), who lost her husband and daughter in an accident, after which she develops agoraphobia and stays inside her home, often drinking and spying on her neighbors.
One day, she witnesses what she believes is a woman being stabbed, only to find out that the woman is alive and well. Has her trauma triggered some form of psychosis, or is there a sinister individual who has set their eyes on her?
Five Nights at Freddy’s
This one has all the elements of a great horror mystery: spirits, visions, grisly murder, and, believe it or not, animatronic robots.
The movie features Josh Hutchinson as Mike, a down-on-his-luck security guard who has to find a job to maintain custody of his little sister, forcing him to accept a job at an abandoned pizzeria called Freddy’s. From there, the nightmare begins, as Mike starts seeing dreams with five children, who make him relive the day his brother was kidnapped, never to be seen again.
Soon, a fleet of animatronic robots taken over by the spirits starts chasing Mike around. What are the spirits trying to say? Are they planning to hurt Mike? Or are they victims themselves?
